چکیده

We investigate a ring of N FitzHugh–Nagumo elements coupled in phase-repulsive fashion and submitted to a (subthreshold) common oscillatory signal and independent Gaussian white noises. This system can be regarded as a reduced version of the one studied in [Phys. Rev. E 64, 041912 (2001)], although externally forced and submitted to noise. The noise-sustained synchronization of the system with the external signal is characterized.

Synchronization Properties of Coupled FitzHugh-Nagumo Systems

— We study the synchronized/unsynchronized transition as a function of the noise intensity which appears in a system of globally coupled FitzHugh– Nagumo units under the effect of white noise. By the use of the proper definition of an order parameter, we obtain numerically the phase diagram as a function of the noise intensity and coupling constant.

Inference Methods for Interaction and Noise Intensities Using Only Spike-time Data on Coupled Oscillators

Abstract We propose theoretical methods to infer coupling strength and noise intensity simultaneously through an observation of spike timing in two well-synchronized noisy oscillators. A phase oscillator model is applied to derive formulae relating each of the parameters to some statistics from spiketime data. Using these formulae, each parameter is inferred from a specific set of statistics. W...

Spiking behavior in a noise-driven system combining oscillatory and excitatory properties.

We show that firing activity (spiking) can be regularized by noise in a FitzHugh-Nagumo (FHN) neuron model when operating slightly beyond the supercritical Hopf bifurcation (in the "canard" region). We also provide the conditions for imperfect phase locking between interspike intervals and low amplitude quasiharmonic oscillations. For the imperfect phase locking no need exists of an external si...

Noise-enhanced excitability in bistable activator-inhibitor media.

We show that external fluctuations induce excitable behavior in a bistable spatially extended system with activator-inhibitor dynamics of the FitzHugh-Nagumo type. This can be understood as a mechanism for sustained signal propagation in bistable media. The phase diagram of the stochastic system is analytically obtained and numerically verified. For small-noise intensities, front propagation be...

Noise-induced excitability in oscillatory media.

A noise-induced phase transition to excitability is reported in oscillatory media with FitzHugh-Nagumo dynamics. This transition takes place via a noise-induced stabilization of a deterministically unstable fixed point of the local dynamics, while the overall phase-space structure of the system is maintained. Spatial coupling is required to prevent oscillations through suppression of fluctuatio...
